RentHelpMN was created to help Minnesotans who have fallen behind on their rent or utility bills or fear that could happen. If you find yourself in this position, RentHelpMN is here to help. Eligible renters can receive assistance with rent and utility bills dated on or after March 13, 2020. If you qualify, you could receive up to 15 months of total assistance.

Find out if you qualify and apply at renthelpmn.org or by calling 211, which has dedicated multilingual staff available to answer questions from 8:00am until 8:00pm, Monday through Saturday.

Minnesota Vaccine Connector

The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is now approved for young people 12 to 15 years old!  Getting vaccinated helps all of us get back to what we’ve missed sooner and safely.  Signing up for the Minnesota COVID-19 vaccine connector lets you get updates on vaccine opportunities in our area in English, Spanish, Somali or Hmong.

Do your part now by continuing to help slow the spread of COVID-19: Wear a mask, wash your hands often, stay 6 feet away from anyone you don’t live with, and stay home if you are sick. Doing all of these things will help keep people healthy until all Minnesotans have the opportunity to get vaccinated.

Spring Tea & Blooms Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who attended our Spring Tea & Blooms event this past weekend!  We had a blast handing out take-home planting kits, giving away cookies donated by Café Cerés and free books from Jump! at 54th & Penn, and seeing neighbors after a long winter. Thanks to Jinx Tea and Sparrow Café for being part of the event and an especially huge thank you to our Community Engagement volunteer team!

The groovy, reusable tote bag’s contents include useful information on the ANA, elected representatives, governmental services, local businesses, and a couple of fun items to welcome you.

  • Homeowners: be on the lookout for friendly ANA volunteers Ethan (pictured) or Kevin with a Welcome Bag with your name on it! They’ll swing by to do a masked, distanced drop-off.
  • Renters: if you are a renter who moved in during the past year or if you own a rental property in the neighborhood and have new tenants, please reach out to us at anacoordinator@armatage.org and let us know where we can drop off a Welcome Bag!

Spring Tea & Blooms this Saturday!

Grab your mask and join us for Spring Tea & Blooms at Armatage Park this Saturday from 2:00-4:00pm! Jinx Tea and Sparrow Café will take orders outside, new neighborhood business Café Cerés will share samples, and the ANA will give away take-home kids’ planting kits (supplies are limited). Pick up a free book donated by Jump! at 54th & Penn and complete a scavenger hunt and enter to win a gift card to a neighborhood business!

Thank you for following our safety guidelines by wearing a mask during the event, keeping 6 feet of distance from everyone outside of your household, and bringing your treats home or into the park to enjoy. The weather looks great but in case of severe weather, cancellations will be posted on Facebook, Nextdoor, and Twitter.

Please consider running for the Armatage Neighborhood Association’s Board of Directors through our annual Board Election this May. Board members have a critical role in shaping our neighborhood nonprofit for years to come and it’s a great way to get involved and give back.

Members of underrepresented communities are especially encouraged to run for the board, including renters, seniors, residents with disabilities, and residents who identify as LGBTQ or BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and/or People of Color).

Make your voice heard and vote in the Online Board Election from May 11 through May 18 at 7:30pm. All Armatage residents 18 years and older and designated business/institutional representatives are able to vote in the election through an online form that will be posted at armatage.org on May 11. Garden Tool Swap: May 8

Spring is officially here! To celebrate many of us are turning towards our home and our green spaces. When cleaning out your storage, hang on to unused yard tools, gardening items, and plant-related equipment and bring them to the first ever city-wide Garden Tool Swap!  Our closest location is at Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park (4055 Nicollet Ave S). See items to bring, other swap locations and more details here.

The swap is hosted by Minneapolis Solid Waste & Recycling and community partners. ALL are welcome at the free event, whether you’re a first-time gardener or have a green thumb.

  • All items are intended to be given and taken freely. Garden tools and equipment are not for sale at this event.
  • Please be respectful of your neighbors. Take only what you need so everyone can participate.
  • Wear face coverings and maintain at least 6 feet distance from others.

Social Media – Pause Before You Post

Social media can be a great way to stay informed, but it’s important to consider whether the information you’re reading is from a trusted source and to pause before posting or sharing. Last Friday, a crime was reported as occurring in Armatage on a local Facebook group and on Nextdoor. When we followed up with the Minneapolis Police Department to learn more, we learned that the original incident hadn’t actually occurred in Armatage at all but was misreported and then shared widely.

You can do your part by seeking trusted sources for news and taking a moment to pause before sharing information on social media. Does your post or the post you’re sharing:

  1. Focus on behavior and how/why you think it is suspicious (which might change depending on the time of day)
  1. Provide a full description of the person/s involved, including clothing, as well as details about the location, vehicle, etc. to avoid over-generalizations

To help us all be both good neighbors and sharers of good information, the ANA will continue to compile safety resources through the August trials at https://armatage.org/trial/

Community Safety Workshops

Nonviolent Peaceforce is holding Community Safety Training Workshops on May 8 and May 22 from Saturday from 11:00am-5:00pm (optional breakfast will be provided for participants at 10:00am) located outdoors in the Little Earth Neighborhood (meet at Cedar Ave S & 24th St E, Minneapolis, MN 55404). The Community Safety Training Workshops focus on preparing individuals and communities for handling community safety concerns and situations. The learning objectives are rooted in Unarmed Civilian Protection (UCP) and aim to supply participants with skills for approaching safety concerns and providing a safe space for the community. Welcome to New Board Members!

Congratulations to Vikisha Goberdhan and Ethan Komoroski on being elected to the ANA Board!  And thanks to everyone who joined to vote in this month’s Special Election.

At the November 17 meeting, the ANA Board approved year-end expenses, discussed proposed changes to the board and committee expectations and renewed staffing contracts for our Coordinator, Lauren Anderson, and our Accountant, Rachel Ireland-Henry.

Armatage Holiday Light Tour

Enjoy the colorful city streets and light displays of the Armatage Neighborhood this holiday season with our first-ever Holiday Light Tour from 5:00-8:00pm on Friday, December 11 through Sunday, December 20.

Minneapolis Solid Waste & Recycling Survey

Transforming Community Safety Survey Closes Friday

There’s just over a day left to provide your input on what community safety looks like and share your ideas about a new model of community safety for the City of Minneapolis. Your input will help inform efforts to expand and improve the public safety system, with the goal of ensuring that every single person in Minneapolis can trust they’ll be kept safe. COVID-19 Housing Assistance

Minnesota’s COVID-19 Housing Assistance Program helps cover housing expenses such as rent, mortgage, utilities or other housing-related costs for eligible renters and homeowners in communities across the state. People in Minnesota interested in applying for assistance can call the Greater Twin Cities United Way’s 211 Resource Helpline at 651-291-0211, visiting 211unitedway.org or texting “MNRENT” or “MNHOME” to 898-211. The 211 Helpline has dedicated multilingual staff to answer questions about the COVID-19 Housing Assistance Program 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. You can also check the COVID-19 Housing Assistance Program frequently asked questions.

Hennepin County also continues to offer emergency rental assistance for residents with low incomes who have been financially harmed by COVID-19. Residents can learn more and apply at www.hennepin.us/rent-help

Give Feedback on the Proposed 2020 Budget

Share your thoughts on Mayor Frey’s recommended 2021 City Budget by submitting a comment online or at an upcoming virtual public hearing:

Learn how to participate in online public hearings here. Comments submitted online will be entered into the public record and shared with the mayor and council members. The City Council is scheduled to vote on adopting the budget on Wednesday, Dec. 9. New Stay Home Order Takes Effect Friday

Tomorrow (Friday, November 20), new statewide restrictions will go into effect to combat the dangerous spike in COVID-19 cases that has occurred this fall. Some of these changes include:

  • All bars and restaurants will end dine-in service and operate exclusively with takeout or delivery. This is a great opportunity to support our neighborhood businesses by getting take out!
  • Fitness centers and gyms will be closed.
  • Adult and youth sports practices and competitions will be paused (professional and collegiate sports will continue).
  • Minnesotans should not gather with anyone outside their immediate household, whether indoors or outdoors.
  • During the next four weeks, no person outside of the immediate household be brought into your home, except if certain exceptions apply.
  • Weddings, funerals, and other similar planned ceremonies can be held with the current rules in place, but all receptions and gatherings around these ceremonies must be canceled or postponed.

Whether you are spring cleaning, need to Marie Kondo your house or just want to make a donation to help someone in need, bring your goods on Saturday, April 6 and the Armatage Green Team will help you sort and pass them along to one of many wonderful organizations.

Organizations supported through the Donation Drive include Ready for Success, Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery, Animal Humane Society, CornerstoneMN, Tech Dump, Leonardo’s Basement, Committee Against Domestic Abuse, DAV, and Second Harvest Heartland. Accepted items include clothing (especially men’s and women’s professional clothing), working electronics and cords, new children’s clothing, baby food and formula, new toiletries and personal care items, clean textiles and stuffed animals, food shelf donations, wire hangers, and more.  Contact anacoordinator@armatage.org for more information.


Street Flooding and Storm Drains

Thanks to our record snowfall and rain, many streets are flooded and storm drains are blocked. Please contact 311 to report flooded streets so crews can keep our roads safe.

If you’re able to clear the snow and ice from your block’s storm drain(s), please do! Many Minneapolis residents are using Google Maps Street View to find the locations of the storm drains on their block. The City of Minneapolis will re-launch its Adopt a Storm Drain program this spring.  Learn more and sign up to adopt your storm drain at http://www.minneapolismn.gov/publicworks/stormwater/adoptadrain


Avoid Ice Dams with Help from the City and CenterPoint Energy

Icicles and ice dams mean that a lot of energy – and money – is being wasted as heat escapes through the roof of your home. You can solve that problem by sealing air leaks between your house and attic adding insulation in your attic. Insulation can help protect your house from ice dams and water damage while saving you money and energy – and even reducing the pollution that contributes to climate change.

Get Help

  • CenterPoint Energy offers rebates for 30 percent of the cost ($500 maximum) when you air seal and insulate your attic. For details, visit www.centerpointenergy.com/rebates.
  • The City of Minneapolis offers loans for the work with no interest. For more information, call 612-335-5884 or visit mnlendingcenter.org/mpls.

Shovel Out Garbage and Recycling Carts

This winter’s frequent snowfalls have made it difficult for crews to collect garbage, recycling and organics, and pulling a cart out of a snowdrift can injure them. Remember before your collection day to shovel a 36-inch-wide path from your garbage, recycling and organics carts to the street or alley.

City ordinances require this path be cleared for garbage, recycling and organics carts within 48 hours after the snow stops falling. If City crews have to shovel out the cart(s), a fee of $30 per cart will be added to your utility bill. If the snow stops for less than 48 hours and the carts aren’t yet shoveled out, for their safety, crews can’t empty the carts.

Neighborhoods 2020 – Comment by March 31

Want to keep the Summer Festival, Halloween at the Park, Happy Hours, rain gardens, Fire on Ice, forums on pressing community issues, or security rebates? These and more are all services provided and supported by the Armatage Neighborhood Association. Funding for neighborhood groups like ANA and the events we support runs out next year.

The City of Minneapolis is reviewing new guidelines, funding, and whether neighborhood organizations will continue to exist to support our community’s needs. The vision of Neighborhoods 2020 is to have an inclusive community where all people are valued, all communities are engaged, and leadership mirrors the great diversity of the city. Southwest Parks and Minnehaha Parkway Initial Concept Designs

In case you missed it: Initial Concept Designs are out for each Southwest Minneapolis park and for the Minnehaha Parkway Regional Trail.  We’ve posted the design options for Armatage Park, the Washburn Tot Lot, the 58th & Oliver Triangle and Minnehaha Parkway on the ANA website at https://armatage.org/southwest-park-plan-initial-concept-designs/  All Southwest park designs are searchable at minneapolisparks.org/sw and full Minnehaha Parkway designs are at minneapolisparks.org/minnehahacreek.

If for some reason we cannot take your item, we will find the best recycling or disposal option for you.

Introducing Armatage Neighborhood Mini Grants!

How can we make our neighborhood a better place and engage our neighbors? If you have ideas and want to implement them, the ANA has just launched a new Armatage Neighborhood Mini Grants Program. Grants are available for up to $1,000 and subject to the City requirements that prohibit spending on food or entertainment. Get all your questions answered at armatage.org/programs/mini-grants or at a Q & A session at our Annual Meeting on May 21.

The deadline to apply for a Mini Grant is June 15. Award notifications will be made by August 1, 2019 and grant recipients will have up to a year to complete their projects. Questions? Please contact us at anacoordinator@armatage.org.


Armatage/Kenny Egg Hunt

Celebrate the arrival of spring with our annual egg hunt at Armatage Park. Bring the whole family down for this fun event. Enjoy an Egg Hunt, caricature artist, arts and crafts, live bunnies, and a light continental breakfast.

Soma Bra Donation:

    • We created the Soma Bra Donation to help restore dignity and self-esteem to women in need. To date, we have collected more than 1.7 million bras for women’s shelters affiliated with our partners across the U.S. and beyond. Donated bras are distributed to women affected by domestic violence and/or homelessness through the National Network to End Domestic Violence and the I Support the Girls organization.

Donation Request Policy

Adopted January 1, 2008

  • Any person or organization wishing to ask the ANA for a financial contribution must submit their request in writing or via email to the board president, secretary or NRP coordinator by the second Tuesday of the month.
  • If the request is submitted by this time, the request will placed on the next meeting’s agenda. the meeting will occur a week after, on the third Tuesday of the month.
  • Either the person submitting the request or a representative from the organization submitting the request must appear at the meeting and orally present their request to the board.
  • After the presentation and board discussion, the board will vote on the request.
  • If the request is not submitted by the second Tuesday of the month, or an individual or organization appears at the next board meeting to present their request, the board will place the request on the next month’s agenda, and will follow the procedure listed above.
