Turning Garages, Basements, and Backyards into Housing

More than 130 local families have added an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) to their homes in the four short years since Minneapolis adopted an ADU ordinance. If you’re curious about how an ADU could help your family, then check out our free Home + home: Twin Cities ADU Guidebook, found at www.fhfund.org/adu/.

What is an ADU, you ask? You probably know them as basement and attic apartments, mother-in-law units, and backyard cottages. Whatever you call them, you can use one to downsize while staying in your own neighborhood. You can provide an affordable home to elderly or young relatives alike. And you can strengthen your family’s finances by renting the ADU out. Check out the guidebook to learn more! Article by David Wade, ADU Outreach Coordinator, Family Housing Fund
