Funding for Neighborhood Organizations Expires in 2020

We need your help! Funding for neighborhood organizations is set to expire in 2020 and Minneapolis City Council is planning to vote soon on whether or not to continue funding neighborhood organizations, who provide many services to their communities including summer festivals, rain garden grants, micro grants, security rebates and more.

If you find value in these or other services provided by your neighborhood organization and would like funding to continue, please let City Council know with the sample letter at armatage.org/n2020

2040 Comprehensive Plan Update

The City of Minneapolis’s 2040 Comprehensive Plan will go before the Metropolitan Council for review later this month. Following Met Council approval, the Minneapolis City Council will take final action to approve the plan on October 11. Volunteer for Pedestrian & Bicycle Counts

Volunteers are needed to count the number of bicyclists and pedestrians at several locations around the city. The main days for counting will be September 10-12. All count shifts are from 4:00-6:00 p.m.

Bicyclist and pedestrian counts are conducted in order to understand the impact of non-motorized traffic on streets, sidewalks, and trails. Accurate counts enable the City to plan and build for bicyclists and pedestrians, while tracking what’s successful and what should be done differently.

Become a Certified Master Water Steward

Apply to become a trained and certified as a Master Water Steward and you will join a team of people who have dreamed up, created, and installed projects that make measurable impacts on water health, prevent pollution and educate community members to conserve and protect our waterways. Applications are now being accepted for the Fall 2019 cohort of Master Water Stewards.

Missing Middle Housing Program RFP

The City of Minneapolis currently has a Request for Proposals to fund the increase of affordable housing in the City through the Missing Middle Housing Pilot Program, which provides funding for the construction of 3 to 20-unit residential housing in Minneapolis on City-owned lots or privately-owned lots. RFP materials are available at: http://www.minneapolismn.gov/cped/housing/MissingMiddle. RFP submissions are due at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 to MplsHomes@minneapolismn.gov.

National Night Out

National Night Out is tonight!  Thanks to everyone who registered their block! Tonight’s weather looks perfect and we hope you have a wonderful time reconnecting with neighbors!

Zero waste

This year, instead of creating a mountain of garbage at your block party, take these easy steps to go zero waste:

  • Before the event: opt for recyclable packaging and 100% compostable tableware (look for the BPI certified logo) and ask neighbors to do the same. Or, have everyone bring their own washable plates, cups and utensils.
  • Event set up: Create a zero waste station with large organics and recycling bins and a small trash bin. Find links to download free colorful bin labels with pictures at armatage.org.
  • At and after the event: Help neighbors understand where items go. Keep an eye on the bins and pull out items that land in the wrong spot. Take pictures of what you collect at the end of the party and send them to neighbors with a thank you.

Local 4th of July Celebrations

Staying in town for the 4th? The Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board put together a great list of celebrations and event in the parks and around Minneapolis!

Join the Neighborhood and Community Engagement Commission (NCEC)

Representatives of Minneapolis neighborhood and cultural communities sit on the NCEC and advise the Mayor and City Council on a wide range of community engagement issues. Armatage is in District 2, and our area is in need of someone to represent our district! Learn more about the NCEC and apply to run by June 30. Elections are July 17 at 6:00pm at Crown Roller Mill, 105 5th Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55401.

Southdale Library Building Project

The Hennepin County Board authorized staff to negotiate a lease agreement to relocate Hennepin County Library – Southdale to the nearby Southdale Center mall last week.

Under the current proposal, mall developer Simon Property Group will demolish the former Herberger’s building and construct a new building that would house the library. Construction will start in 2020 with completion anticipated in 2022.

In 2015, due to the age of the building and projected cost, the county determined that renovations to the nearly 50-year-old library building would not be prudent. As a result, Hennepin County developed a strategy to relocate services housed at the library. The service center relocated to Southdale Center in 2016. District Court functions also moved out of the building in 2019.

Building the library at the Southdale Center allows for seamless library services, as the library won’t have to close during construction. The new location, accessible by public transit, may also attract new library patrons. Sign up for updates on the project here.

Last Chance to Apply for an Armatage Mini Grant

If you have ideas to make our neighborhood an even better place and want to implement them, the ANA is looking for a couple more applications for this round of grants. Grants are available for up to $1,000 and subject to the City requirements that prohibit spending on food or entertainment.

The deadline to apply for a Mini Grant is this Saturday, June 15. Learn more and download an application form at armatage.org/programs/mini-grants. Summer Home Security Tips

The Fulton neighborhood recently experienced an increase in burglaries. Minneapolis Police Department 5th Precinct Inspector Amelia Huffman and Crime Prevention Coordinator Jennifer Waisanen will be at our Armatage Neighborhood Meeting on June 18. Check out the following tips for protecting your property (insider tip: ANA covers up to $100 of home security updates for Armatage residents through our Safety Rebate Program!).

  • Always keep your home and garage secured and locked. Also, always lock your vehicle doors inside your garage and take all valuables out of the vehicle. (including small change, insurance and registration information)
  • Never leave your garage door opener in your car outside of your garage unlocked.
  • Consider in investing in Wi-Fi Security Cameras. This aids in helping investigators identify potential suspects.
  • Motion lights on garage doors and homes are also a good deterrent for burglars.
  • Call 911 to report suspicious activity. This includes strangers walking down your alley and looking in garages, loitering, or vehicles circling the block with occupants you don’t recognize.
  • Burglars commonly knock on doors to see if anyone is home. Please call 911 to report any suspicious persons who knock on your door or ring your doorbell. For example, someone giving you a name of a person they are looking for, who doesn’t live there!
  • If you are burglarized, do not contaminate the crime scene. Do not enter your home until police have cleared it of possible suspects. Do not touch any suspected entry points or items that may have been moved or touched by the burglar. Do not “clean up” until after police have investigated.

Submit Minneapolis Transportation Action Plan feedback by June 6

City staff want to hear from you as they develop the Minneapolis Transportation Action Plan and Vision Zero Action Plan.

Staff are collecting feedback through June 6 via online surveys and comment maps where you can offer suggestions on improving transportation infrastructure, take surveys on each of the Transportation Action Plan topics, and leave detailed feedback about your thoughts on Vision Zero-related safety concerns.

Watch an online open house and Q&A session to learn more about the two plans and how to get involved. In addition to the online forum, Public Works staff held community workshops, organization workshops, and a series of community dialogues throughout April to collect public input on ways to improve the city’s transportation system.

Adopt-A-Drain: Help Protect Our Lakes, Creeks and the Mississippi River!

When it rains, stormwater carries grass clippings, leaves, cigarette butts, pesticides, fertilizers, antifreeze, paint, gasoline, motor oil, and animal waste directly into Minneapolis lakes, creeks and the Mississippi River. Armatage residents and businesses can help keep our waters clean by adopting storm drains in their neighborhood and committing to cleaning them regularly.

The Metro Area has launched a new version of the Adopt-A-Drain program for residents who want to help keep our waters clean and clear. This new program will make the adopting process easier and quicker. You will be able to adopt or un-adopt storm drains instantly and you will have the option to name your adopted storm drains. You will still find news and tips at the Minneapolis Adopt-A-Drain website, where you can will find a link to the new metro-wide program:

Share your feedback in a few ways:

  1. Attend the Armatage Neighborhood Meeting on Tuesday, February 19 at 6:30 pm for a brief presentation.
  2. Take the online survey at the SW Parks Plan project page (open through March 31).
  3. Drop off a comment: All 13 Southwest Minneapolis Recreation Centers as well as MPRB Headquarters and Parade Ice Arena have a printed packet of concept designs, along with comment cards and drop-off boxes.

Neighborhoods 2020 – Comment Now Through March 31

The City of Minneapolis just released new framework recommendations to govern and fund neighborhood organizations in 2020 and beyond, after the current funding for Armatage Neighborhood Association and other Minneapolis neighborhoods runs out. Neighborhoods 2020 is an opportunity to further develop and improve upon the City of Minneapolis’ neighborhood based engagement structure and the vision is to have an inclusive community where all people are valued, all communities are engaged, and leadership mirrors the great diversity of the city.

What do neighborhoods do? ANA currently offers the Summer Festival, Safety Rebate program, Neighborhood Happy Hours, Rain Garden program, support for seasonal events and improvements at Armatage Park, neighborhood meetings on pressing concerns, and acts as a conduit for the neighborhood and city. All our meetings (held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month) and events are open to community members and we work to connect residents and businesses with what’s happening in our communities and local government via the newsletters we mail to you four times a year, as well as our eNews, website, and social media channels – Facebook, Twitter and Nextdoor.

It should be noted that changes to neighborhood funding are likely.  How much funding is impacted and whether neighborhood organizations continue to exist depends on the support of our City Council. We respectfully ask that you share your thoughts about this plan so the ANA can continue to serve our neighbors as effectively as possible. Armatage Fix-it Clinic on March 9

Get help with your broken stuff and learn valuable repair skills at  the upcoming Fix-It Clinic on Saturday, March 9 from 12:00pm – 4:00pm at the Armatage Recreation Center (2500 West 57th Street). Bring in small household appliances, clothing, electronics, mobile devices and more and receive free guided assistance from volunteers with repair skills to disassemble, troubleshoot and fix your items.

Fix-It Clinics teach valuable troubleshooting and basic repair skills, build community connections and reduce the number of repairable items that are thrown in the trash. Pet Visitor and Social Companion Volunteers Needed

Optage Hospice is currently looking for pet visitor and social companion volunteers in Bloomington and other south and west metro locations. You could help bring comfort, support, and peace to individuals on Hospice and their loved ones. Nothing makes our patients light up more than a friendly pup! February 19 Neighborhood Meeting Highlights

  • Southwest Parks & Minnehaha Parkway Regional Trail Master Plans: Madeline Hudek from the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and Mike Jischke who volunteers on the Minnehaha Parkway Regional Trail Citizen Advisory Committee attended to give an update on the new Initial Concept Designs for each park space in SW Minneapolis and along Minnehaha Parkway. Residents asked questions and voiced concerns around the proposed smaller parking lot at Armatage Park, changes around more soccer and fewer baseball/softball fields, real vs. artifical turf, and the lack of a walkable neighborhood dog park. (See the designs and how to weigh in on both plans here).
  • The board edited and approved its 2018 Annual Report for the City of Minneapolis.
  • Neighborhoods 2020: the City recently released a draft framework that would change how neighborhood organizations like the ANA are governed and funded.  Funding changes are likely and that could have a big impact on the programs, events, and services the ANA offers. The board discussed the proposed changes outlined in the framework, the recent Neighborhoods 2020 workshop at the Community Connections Conference on February 2, how to weigh in, and strategies to engage residents in the process.
  • The ANA plans to launch a new Mini Grant program this spring. The board discussed the proposed guidelines and application drafted by the Mini Grant Committee, made edits, and voted to approve proceeding with the program. The board will vote on Mini Grant initial funding at its March 19 meeting.
  • The Green Team met on February 6 and discussed zero waste at the upcoming summer festival, the upcoming 2019 rain garden project and reserving a few rain garden slots for renters (with property owner approval), offering additional grants for rain garden applicants who meet income guidelines and the upcoming Fix-it Clinic on March 9. Winter Parking Restrictions
