Snow is falling today! Your neighbors, people pushing strollers or using wheelchairs, and the many people in Minneapolis who walk thank you for keeping our sidewalks safe and accessible!

In Minneapolis, we are required to clear sidewalks after the end of a snowfall within:

  • 24 hours for homes and duplexes
  • Four daytime hours for apartment and commercial buildings (daytime hours begin at 8 am)

Get all your snow removal questions answered here and pick up free sand at the Public Works building at 6036 Harriet Ave S.

While the ANA didn’t host a Tree lighting event this year, the annual neighborhood-sponsored holiday lights are up in Armatage Park along the east side of the building.

You can still drop off new, unopened formula, diapers, pull-ups, children’s toiletries, new with tags clothing and more to benefit the Greater Twin Cities Crisis Nursery now through December 20. Check out the Crisis Nursery’s full donation wish list here and look for a donation bin in the lobby of the Armatage Rec Center.

Comprehensive District Design Studies & Listening Sessions

Have you been following the district’s Comprehensive District Design process that aims to increase equity and close student achievement gaps in MPS?  Two new studies available this week propose changes to Minneapolis Public Schools’ magnet programs and community school boundaries. The studies outline significant proposed changes for Armatage School and Zone 3. If passed by the school board next spring, proposed changes would start to take effect in Fall 2021.

Community listening sessions are scheduled for January and February and you can also give feedback online.  Learn more about the Comprehensive District Design process here.


Cold Weather Resources

Resources are available for Minnesotans who struggle to afford their heating bills. The Cold Weather Rule, which went into effect last month, helps protect people from having their heat shut off when they need it the most. There are also energy assistance programs to help renters and homeowners pay for heating costs and furnace repairs.

The City of Minneapolis is now accepting applications for the Minneapolis 4d Affordable Housing Incentive Program, which helps property owners obtain property tax reductions for agreeing to keep a portion of rental units affordable for 10 years.

Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis with a final deadline of January 8, 2020. Property owners are encouraged to apply early. Learn more about the 4d Affordable Housing Incentive Program here.


Take MnDOT’s 35W@94 Outreach Survey

Take the community engagement survey to let MnDOT know how their team is doing on community engagement for the 35W@94 project and how they can improve for 2020. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

New Hennepin County Deconstruction Incentives

Planning some home remodeling? Hennepin County will begin offering deconstruction incentives for both homeowners and developers to reduce the amount of reusable or recyclable building materials in our waste stream.

The deconstruction incentive program will provide up to $5,000 per project for the complete removal or major renovation of residential properties, offsetting some of the costs associated with utilizing deconstruction techniques versus traditional demolition. To be eligible, structures must be built before 1950 and the area to be renovated must be at least 250 square feet.  Much more info is to come, but read the preliminary details on the county’s website here.

Give Feedback on the Proposed City Budget

There are two more public hearings for people to share thoughts on Mayor Jacob Frey’s recommended 2020 City budget of $1.6 billion. The City’s revenues come from a variety of sources with property taxes accounting for about 23% of the budget.  Comments can also be submitted online to be shared with the Mayor and Council Members. The City Council is scheduled to vote on adopting the budget Wednesday, December 11.

Budget public hearings at City Hall:

  • December 4 at 6:00pm: Truth in Taxation hearing to get community input on the total levy amount.
  • December 11 at 6:00pm: Opportunity to respond to the City Council’s amendments, for Council to make any further changes based on that, and then a vote to adopt the 2020 budget.

Snow Emergency Resources

Sign up now, stay informed throughout the season, and avoid getting ticketed or towed:

  • Hotline: Call the automated 612-348-SNOW hotline. The hotline includes information in English, Spanish, Somali and Hmong.
  • The City’s website: Go to minneapolismn.gov/snow to find out whether a Snow Emergency has been declared in many languages. Also, check out the street lookup, which lets you put in an address or a neighborhood to see where you can park during a Snow Emergency.
  • Phone calls to residents: Minneapolis uses automated phone calls to notify residents when Snow Emergencies are declared. The system can place thousands of calls per hour. You can add your cellphone or unlisted landline number to the alert system by signing up at minneapolismn.gov/snow.
  • Social media: Like Minneapolis Snow Emergency on Facebook and Twitter.

Comment on Public Works’ draft Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan

The City of Minneapolis is seeking public comment on the draft Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan for Public Works – a plan that identifies priorities for removing accessibility barriers in the City’s public right of way.

The City is accepting comments on the draft plan through Dec. 27. It is a supplemental plan to the City’s ADA Action Plan, a comprehensive policy document for the City of Minneapolis to comply with the Title II requirements of the ADA. The draft plan was last updated in 2012.

November 19 Meeting Recap

Welcome to new Armatage & Kenny Park Director, Jordan Nelson.  Jordan comes from Van Cleve Park near the University of Minnesota. We’d also like to extend a huge thank you to outgoing director Nikki Friederich who has been an wonderful leader for Armatage & Kenny and is moving to Creekview Park.

The ANA presented an overview of the draft funding plan, its community engagement efforts this fall, a summary of the feedback received, and the final proposed plan. Over the past 5 weeks, 160 community members weighed in on the funding plan with an overall approval rate of 89.4%.  Based on the comments received, the plan stayed consistent and the remaining $15,000 was allocated to the following priorities:

  • An extra $7,000 to Traffic Calming & Pedestrian Safety, bringing the plan total to $17,000,
  • $4,000 to Park Improvements (joining the $24,000 approved for parks in previous years by the ANA),
  • $4,000 to Environmental & Greening Programming.

The final plan was discussed and approved unanimously. It will now head to the City for legal review and final approval this winter. Please contact the ANA at 612.466.0296 or anacoordinator@armatage.org with any questions.


E Line Community Open House Tonight

Metro Transit will host an E Line Open House tonight, Thursday, November 21, from 4:00-6:00pm at Pershing Rec Center (3523 W 48th St).

Minnehaha Creek Community Open House Tonight

The Minnehaha Parkway Regional Trail Master Plan reconvenes tonight to review and discuss findings from a recently completed parkway traffic study. The master plan project paused in July to allow time for a study to be performed.

This meeting will provide space for the general public to converse with MPRB staff and the consultant team about the traffic study and the parkway west of Portland Avenue. Theodore Wirth House Tours

The Theodore Wirth Home and his park planning offices in Lyndale Farmstead Park will be open to the public for FREE guided tours on Sunday, November 24 from 12:00-4:00pm. Volunteers with Minneapolis Parks Legacy Society, working in cooperation with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, would like to invite all of our neighbors to visit this historic site.

Adopt A Storm Drain

Fall is an important time to keep leaves out of the gutter so they don’t get rush down the storm drain each time it rains. In the storm drain, leaves get carried to the Creek and eventually to Lake Hiawatha, adding the phosphorus that causes algae blooms.

If you haven’t already, consider the Adopt a Drain program and sign up to keep one or more storm drains on your street clear so that only water goes into it. You can adopt any drain that hasn’t already been adopted, even if it isn’t in front of your house! This interactive website helps you locate drains near you and adopt any that you choose: https://www.adopt-a-drain.org/ There are MANY drains that still need to be adopted in Armatage (shown in yellow below):

If you need assistance adopting a drain OR if you would like a friendly neighborhood volunteer to assist you the first time you set out to clean your storm drain, please contact the ANA at anacoordinator@armatage.org. The ANA’s Green Team will also provide the next twenty people who sign up to Adopt-a-Drain with a free pair of gloves to wear when cleaning your drain. Litter Be Gone: Thank You Volunteers!

Huge thanks to the 22 volunteers who cleaned up our neighborhood streets, sidewalks, parks and storm drains this past Sunday, October 6. We collected 6 huge bags of trash, 5 bags of recycling and 5 yard waste bags of leaves that were clogging storm drains!

The ANA and the Green Team are so grateful to Book Club Restaurant and the citywide Litter Be Gone team for their support of our fall clean-up event!

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) are a great way for families to provide a home to a relative, earn rental income, or downsize in their own neighborhood. Join the Family Housing Fund at this upcoming workshop and hear from architects, builders, and lenders on how to design, finance, permit, and build your own ADU. Speakers will share presentations on accessory apartments they’ve built across the region and then speak with you one-on-one at booths with even more examples of their work.

The Family Housing Fund is a Twin Cities nonprofit with a 40-year track record of partnering throughout the region to build a strong housing system that allows people, communities, and the region to prosper.


October is Energy Awareness Month

Governor Walz has declared October Energy Awareness Month in Minnesota. Change Matters – Sleep Matters

The Wedge and Linden Hills Co-ops have chosen My Very Own Bed as their October Change Matters partner. Change Matters is a register round-up program that promotes the work of local non-profits and invites shoppers to provide critical funding by rounding up their purchases.

My Very Own Bed provides new beds and linens to children in our community who would otherwise be sleeping on the floor or sharing a bed with a parent or sibling. We focus on beds for kids because of the amazing power of sleep to help kids thrive. Healthy sleep helps children fight off illness, enhances growth, improves self-regulation and stress control, and aids learning. We also believe that all children deserve at least a small, comfortable place to call their own.

In October, shoppers at the Wedge Co-op, Wedge Table, and Linden Hills Co-op will be asked to round up their purchases to support My Very Own Bed. Each $200 raised will provide front-door delivery of a new bed and dream kit (new, twin-sized sheets, blanket, mattress pad, pillow, and stuffed animal) to another child. The stores will also collect these dream kit items.

Comprehensive District Design Survey

MPS invites anyone who has students enrolled at MPS schools to complete a survey that focuses on the student placement process. The deadline to complete the survey is October 7th. Click here to take the enrollment survey.

Stay tuned as there will be other opportunities to engage in conversations about the Comprehensive District Design process this fall. Broader input on Comprehensive Design elements will become available in October and throughout the school year.

At its final meeting, the Community Advisory Committee (CAC) will finalize recommendations for each park (including Armatage Park, the Washburn Tot Lot and the 58th & Oliver Triangle). 2040 Comprehensive Plan Update

The City of Minneapolis’s 2040 Comprehensive Plan will go before the Metropolitan Council for review later this month. Following Met Council approval, the Minneapolis City Council will take final action to approve the plan on October 11. Volunteer for Pedestrian & Bicycle Counts

Volunteers are needed to count the number of bicyclists and pedestrians at several locations around the city. The main days for counting will be September 10-12. All count shifts are from 4:00-6:00 p.m.

Bicyclist and pedestrian counts are conducted in order to understand the impact of non-motorized traffic on streets, sidewalks, and trails. Accurate counts enable the City to plan and build for bicyclists and pedestrians, while tracking what’s successful and what should be done differently.

Become a Certified Master Water Steward

Apply to become a trained and certified as a Master Water Steward and you will join a team of people who have dreamed up, created, and installed projects that make measurable impacts on water health, prevent pollution and educate community members to conserve and protect our waterways. Applications are now being accepted for the Fall 2019 cohort of Master Water Stewards.

Missing Middle Housing Program RFP

The City of Minneapolis currently has a Request for Proposals to fund the increase of affordable housing in the City through the Missing Middle Housing Pilot Program, which provides funding for the construction of 3 to 20-unit residential housing in Minneapolis on City-owned lots or privately-owned lots. RFP materials are available at: http://www.minneapolismn.gov/cped/housing/MissingMiddle. RFP submissions are due at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 to MplsHomes@minneapolismn.gov.

The Summer Festival is a great way for area businesses to connect with attendees, highlight their work, and get lots of recognition for making this much-loved event possible. Our 2018 Summer Festival brought out tons of neighbors to enjoy music, great food vendors, an awesome car show, raffles, and fun and games for kids of all ages.

Submit Minneapolis Transportation Action Plan feedback by June 6

City staff want to hear from you as they develop the Minneapolis Transportation Action Plan and Vision Zero Action Plan.

Staff are collecting feedback through June 6 via online surveys and comment maps where you can offer suggestions on improving transportation infrastructure, take surveys on each of the Transportation Action Plan topics, and leave detailed feedback about your thoughts on Vision Zero-related safety concerns.

Watch an online open house and Q&A session to learn more about the two plans and how to get involved. In addition to the online forum, Public Works staff held community workshops, organization workshops, and a series of community dialogues throughout April to collect public input on ways to improve the city’s transportation system.

Updated Park Concept Designs are Here!

The Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board just released updated concept designs for parks and park-owned properties in Southwest Minneapolis:

The Community Advisory Committee (CAC) will also meet several times to discuss the preferred concepts, provide direction to project staff, and ultimately make recommendations to the Board of Commissioners.

All CAC meetings are open to the public and anyone interested in the refinement of these park concepts is encouraged to attend! Snacks, refreshments and passive children’s activities are provided. Adopt-A-Drain: Help Protect Our Lakes, Creeks and the Mississippi River!

When it rains, stormwater carries grass clippings, leaves, cigarette butts, pesticides, fertilizers, antifreeze, paint, gasoline, motor oil, and animal waste directly into Minneapolis lakes, creeks and the Mississippi River. Armatage residents and businesses can help keep our waters clean by adopting storm drains in their neighborhood and committing to cleaning them regularly.

The Metro Area has launched a new version of the Adopt-A-Drain program for residents who want to help keep our waters clean and clear. This new program will make the adopting process easier and quicker. You will be able to adopt or un-adopt storm drains instantly and you will have the option to name your adopted storm drains. You will still find news and tips at the Minneapolis Adopt-A-Drain website, where you can will find a link to the new metro-wide program:

Neighborhood Roots, the organization that runs Fulton, Kingfield and Nokomis farmers markets, relies on volunteers to make your markets happen. Upcoming Metro Blooms Workshops

Unseasonable warmth, long periods of drought, and flooding rains are the new normal in Minnesota. Metro Blooms is offering three different workshops to share practices for building resilience in your yard so it can withstand these challenges. Most workshops cost $15, but scholarships are available upon request.

  • Resilient Yards Workshop: A framework for understanding resilience including site planning, raingardens, turf alternatives, trees, other plantings and more, as well as one-on-one design assistance for your yard.
  • Turf Alternatives Workshop: Your guide to a low-maintenance lawn that require less watering and fewer chemical inputs, with instructions for establishing it.
  • Healthy Soils Workshop: Learn how to lay the groundwork for healthy soil that helps plants thrive, filters and cleans water, prevents erosion and is teeming with life.

April 16, 2019 Meeting Highlights

  • Our park director, Nikki, reported the Armatage/Kenny Egg Hunt on April 13 was a huge success with 400-500 people in attendance!
  • ANA’s Annual Meeting & Board Elections will be held Tuesday, May 21 at 6:30pm at the Armatage Recreation Center. Several board seats will be up for re-election. Board members discussed event details, agenda, and approved a budget of $500 to serve free pizza, drinks and dessert at the event.
  • This year’s Summer Festival will take place on Sunday, August 11 from 4:00 – 7:00pm. The ANA board discussed recent updates to festival sponsorship, the layout of the event, and the price of wristbands, which will be raised to $6/child with an $18/family maximum in 2019.
  • Over 117 boxes and bags of items were brought to the Green Team’s Donation Drive on April 6. Volunteers sorted items and delivered them to 12 different organizations.  Great job, Green Team!
