Armatage Mini Grant Projects

Congratulations to the recipients of our first ever Armatage Neighborhood Mini Grants!

2020 Grantees:

  • Welcoming Equity Committee at Armatage Montessori to host a series of facilitated workshops on talking to kids about race and racism.
  • Armatage Montessori PTA to create an outdoor learning space in the school courtyard and an Outdoor Curriculum.

2019 Grantees:

  • A community art mural, led by Donté Mearon (pictured, left)
  • A shared neighborhood thermal camera to pinpoint air leaks for home energy improvements, led by Milo Oien-Rochat (pictured, right). This project is ongoing: visit armatage.org/camera to check out the thermal camera for a refundable deposit.

    • Overview of current funding for ANA.  Currently receive approx. $31K per year from the City via CPP
    • Have $222,500 of non-contracted funds from NRP funds. Plan mod is to put them under contract

    • For the $15K that was left for community suggestions the $15K was proposed to be allocated to Pedestrian safety, park improvements, and green initiatives based on the proportion of persons suggesting it be used for each of those areas.
    • Presented final proposed plan with the updated totals to include the $15K referenced above.

  • Green Team:
    • 2020 Rain Garden program – For 2020 the $10K will be spread out among 15 rain gardens to allow more people to participate and get some subsidy.  In general the subsidy will go down. However, the group is still discussing offering additional income based grants which were introduced last year.
    • There was a nice bump in people signing up to adopt a drain after the latest eblast.
    • The group is considering doing some organics recycling outreach in 2020
    • Question: Can we require zero impact or offer more $ to events that we are supporting if they comply?  The board seemed interested in exploring this in the future especially for Park Board events.
  • Mini Grants:
    • 2020 Mini Grants dates
      • There will be one cycle in 2020 with up to 4 grants for $1000 each awarded
      • The program will be announced and open on January 7th 2020 and the deadline will be February 28, 2020.  Awards are expected to be announced Mid-April.
      • Anyone interested in participating in the process should contact Adriana.

Armatage Neighborhood Funds

Huge thanks to the 160 community members who weighed in on the funding plan. The overall approval rate of 89.4%. Based on the comments received, the plan stayed consistent and the remaining $15,000 was allocated to the following priorities:

  • An extra $7,000 to Traffic Calming & Pedestrian Safety, bringing the plan total to $17,000,
  • $4,000 to Park Improvements (joining the $24,000 approved for parks in previous years by the ANA),
  • $4,000 to Environmental & Greening Programming.

The final plan was discussed and approved unanimously by the ANA board on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 and then received final approval by the City of Minneapolis’s Department of Neighborhood & Community Relations.

Background:

City funding for neighborhood organizations like the ANA expires in 2020. There isn’t yet a new plan in place for 2021 and beyond but funding is expected to decrease significantly (or possibly end entirely – see armatage.org/N2020 for more info).

Here’s the Draft Funding Plan we presented to the neighborhood to allocate Armatage’s $220,500 in remaining, unspent funds to keep popular programs and community services operating for the next 4+ years:

  • $40,000 for Rain Gardens: Subsidies for renters and homeowners to install a low cost rain or native gardens to minimize runoff, filter and clean groundwater, and increase pollinator habitat
  • $15,000 for Safety Rebates: Rebates of up to $100 for residents annually for qualifying home safety upgrades. Up to $1,000/yr for businesses (lifetime max of $2,000)
  • $6,000 for Informal Gatherings: Pop-up events and Neighborhood Happy Hours
  • $14,000 for Mini Grants: Grants up to $1,0000 awarded to complete a project focused on the Armatage Neighborhood.
  • $78,500 for Staffing:
    • $70,000 for Program Implementation: Coordination for ANA’s programs, events, communications, volunteer coordination and outreach.
    • $8,500 for Accounting: Accounting and financials for ANA’s work.
  • $10,000 for Traffic Calming and Pedestrian Safety: Support improvements to neighborhood signage, pedestrian and/or bicycle infrastructure, lighting, etc.
  • $44,000 for Community Engagement:
    • $15,000 for Events and Programs: Support Summer Festival, Green Team events, Welcome Bags, park events, and other community programs
    • $5,000 for Supplies and Materials: Office supplies and materials to support community engagement.
    • $24,000 for Neighborhood Communications: Armatage News print newsletters, mailing and printing expenses, digital communications and website.
  • $15,000 – OPEN. Community members were asked to give their ideas.

Princess Bride at Armatage Park

Summer Home Security Tips

The Fulton neighborhood recently experienced an increase in burglaries. Minneapolis Police Department 5th Precinct Inspector Amelia Huffman and Crime Prevention Coordinator Jennifer Waisanen will be at our Armatage Neighborhood Meeting on June 18. Check out the following tips for protecting your property (insider tip: ANA covers up to $100 of home security updates for Armatage residents through our Safety Rebate Program!).

  • Always keep your home and garage secured and locked. Also, always lock your vehicle doors inside your garage and take all valuables out of the vehicle. (including small change, insurance and registration information)
  • Never leave your garage door opener in your car outside of your garage unlocked.
  • Consider in investing in Wi-Fi Security Cameras. This aids in helping investigators identify potential suspects.
  • Motion lights on garage doors and homes are also a good deterrent for burglars.
  • Call 911 to report suspicious activity. This includes strangers walking down your alley and looking in garages, loitering, or vehicles circling the block with occupants you don’t recognize.
  • Burglars commonly knock on doors to see if anyone is home. Please call 911 to report any suspicious persons who knock on your door or ring your doorbell. For example, someone giving you a name of a person they are looking for, who doesn’t live there!
  • If you are burglarized, do not contaminate the crime scene. Do not enter your home until police have cleared it of possible suspects. Do not touch any suspected entry points or items that may have been moved or touched by the burglar. Do not “clean up” until after police have investigated.

Our neighborhood garage sale is a great way to get a lot of bang for your buck! Clear out your clutter and make a little cash. Again this year, we will partner with our friends in the Kenny neighborhood to amp up the traffic to this event. Registration is free this year and due to the growing popularity of weekday sales, you have the option to register your sale for Friday, May 31 in addition to Saturday, June 1. Maps of this year’s sales will be available online and at both the Kenny and Armatage Rec Centers by Thursday, May 30.

We know that not being the property owner can be a barrier so our Green Team will help you get approval from your landlord and offer assistance to help get your garden established, even if you move. Do you want to make your neighborhood a better place? The City of Minneapolis and the Sustainable Healthy Cities Network at the U of M are conducting a survey about how our neighborhoods affect our lives and well-being. Results will be shared with local government to build better cities through better neighborhoods.

Join Metro Transit at one of the upcoming Open Houses (no formal presentation, come anytime) to learn more about the E Line Bus Rapid Transit that would provide faster service along a large portion of Route 6 through Southwest Minneapolis. Elections are low stress and once elected, the time commitment for board members is usually 5-8 hours per month, which includes our monthly neighborhood meeting on the third Tuesday from 6:30-8:15pm.

You are welcome to decide to run at the event, too! Renters are an important part of our neighborhood and are especially encouraged to run.

Kenny/Armatage Garage Sale

Our neighborhood garage sale is a great way to get a lot of bang for your buck! Clear out your clutter and make a little cash. Again this year, we will partner with our friends in the Kenny neighborhood to amp up the traffic to this event. Registration is free this year and due to the growing popularity of weekday sales, you have the option to register your sale for Friday, May 31 in addition to Saturday, June 1. Maps of this year’s sales will be available online and at both the Kenny and Armatage Rec Centers by Thursday, May 30.

Neighborhood Roots, the organization that runs Fulton, Kingfield and Nokomis farmers markets, relies on volunteers to make your markets happen. Upcoming Metro Blooms Workshops

Unseasonable warmth, long periods of drought, and flooding rains are the new normal in Minnesota. Metro Blooms is offering three different workshops to share practices for building resilience in your yard so it can withstand these challenges. Most workshops cost $15, but scholarships are available upon request.

  • Resilient Yards Workshop: A framework for understanding resilience including site planning, raingardens, turf alternatives, trees, other plantings and more, as well as one-on-one design assistance for your yard.
  • Turf Alternatives Workshop: Your guide to a low-maintenance lawn that require less watering and fewer chemical inputs, with instructions for establishing it.
  • Healthy Soils Workshop: Learn how to lay the groundwork for healthy soil that helps plants thrive, filters and cleans water, prevents erosion and is teeming with life.

April 16, 2019 Meeting Highlights

  • Our park director, Nikki, reported the Armatage/Kenny Egg Hunt on April 13 was a huge success with 400-500 people in attendance!
  • ANA’s Annual Meeting & Board Elections will be held Tuesday, May 21 at 6:30pm at the Armatage Recreation Center. Several board seats will be up for re-election. Board members discussed event details, agenda, and approved a budget of $500 to serve free pizza, drinks and dessert at the event.
  • This year’s Summer Festival will take place on Sunday, August 11 from 4:00 – 7:00pm. The ANA board discussed recent updates to festival sponsorship, the layout of the event, and the price of wristbands, which will be raised to $6/child with an $18/family maximum in 2019.
  • Over 117 boxes and bags of items were brought to the Green Team’s Donation Drive on April 6. Volunteers sorted items and delivered them to 12 different organizations.  Great job, Green Team!

Yard waste collection begins this week

The 2019 season for Minneapolis Solid Waste & Recycling collection of leaves, brush and other yard trimmings starts the week of April 8. Minneapolis Solid Waste & Recycling customers can set properly prepared yard waste at their alleys or curbs next to their garbage, recycling, and organics carts by 6:00 am on their weekly collection day.

Yard waste must be in brown Kraft paper or BPI-certified compostable bags. You can also use reusable containers for yard waste (please request a sticker from solid waste). Keep in mind that all bags and reusable containers are lifted and emptied by hand, so size and weight limits apply. Read more about how to prepare your leaves and brush for pickup at the Minneapolis Solid Waste & Recycling here.

For questions about leaf and brush pickup, customers can call Solid Waste & Recycling at 612-673-2917 between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm.

Doors Open Minneapolis

Doors Open Minneapolis is a weekend-long event that gives the public free, behind-the-scenes access to over 110 buildings in the City of Minneapolis that are architecturally, culturally, or socially significant. From theaters to business hubs, sacred spaces to private clubs, sports complexes to engineering wonders, historical gems to not-even-open-yet buildings, Doors Open Minneapolis is a chance to venture into new neighborhoods, learn the stories of Minneapolis’ buildings, and experience the rich and diverse cultures of our community.

900 volunteer greeters are needed, and your help is essential!  Volunteers receive a complimentary t-shirt and a ‘front-of-the-line’ pass so that you will not be standing in lines when visiting venues.  Go to www.doorsopenminneapolis.org to register at the venue of your choice!

Minnesota Severe Weather Awareness Week

Home and personal preparedness
Outdoor warning sirens are for people who are outdoors, and the sirens may not be audible inside. For a heads up indoors about an imminent weather danger, families should consider using the National Weather Service’s NOAA Weather Radio or subscribing to an electronic weather alert service that sends notices by email or text message. Find more information here about signing up for cellphone alerts and downloading smartphone apps.

A simple way to plan ahead for a severe weather emergency is by creating a home emergency kit with these items in a bag or box stored in the basement or home shelter site:

  • Bottled water.
  • Non-perishable snacks and/or ready-to-eat food (include can opener if kit contains canned food).
  • Battery-powered radio.
  • Flashlight and extra batteries.
  • Whistle to signal for help.
  • First aid kit.
  • Dust mask.
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.
  • Local maps.
  • Cellphone with chargers.
  • List of key phone numbers (insurance agent, doctor, etc.).
  • A photocopy of driver’s licenses or State ID cards.

What to do if severe weather is approaching

  • Listen for alerts and warnings on NOAA Weather Radio, local TV, local radio or the weather channel.
  • Listen for outdoor warning sirens if outdoors.
