Happy Holidays from the Armatage Neighborhood Association!

December 15 Meeting Recap

The ANA held its final neighborhood meeting of the year and continued its conversation to update board and committee expectations. Our Coordinator Lauren reported that the Holiday Light Tour has had great attendance with 54 votes and counting. Tour messages will be updated to remind drivers not to idle more than 3 minutes on city streets. Council Member Linea Palmisano joined us for the second half of the meeting to answer questions and give an update on the City’s final 2021 budget after last week’s vote, funding for public safety and the impact of COVID-19 on revenue.

Armatage Holiday Light Tour: Voting Ends Sunday

Enjoy the colorful city streets and light displays of our neighborhood with our Armatage Holiday Light Tour, which runs each night from 5:00-8:00pm through this Sunday, December 20. Download the self-guided tour map at https://armatage.org/holidaylights/

While lights will linger throughout the month, voting wraps up on December 20 at 11:59pm, so after you’ve visited every stop on the tour, head back to vote for your favorite holiday displays. In the spirit of fairness, please hold off on voting until you’ve visited each and every stop. The three addresses with the most votes will get a $50 gift card to an Armatage business!

Huge thanks to our neighbors for making this holiday season so much brighter!

Reduce Waste this Holiday Season

Click here for tips to reduce food waste, buy used, safely recycle items like broken strings of lights, opt for low-waste decor and more from Minneapolis Solid Waste & Recycling!

For all of you exchanging gifts this month, look for wrapping paper that is recyclable and made from recycled paper and does not contain glitter, foil, reflective areas or velvet. These types of wrapping paper cannot be recycled or composted and should be put in the garbage. For extra low waste options, opt for fabric, newspaper (the comics section is particularly fun), old maps or calendars, or plain paper bags or boxes that you decorate yourself.

Crews finished installing signs at Minneapolis entry points to alert drivers that the speed limit is now 20 mph in the city unless otherwise signed. Slower speeds on local streets make travel safer for everyone no matter how you get around.

New speed limits are 20 mph for local residential streets; 25 mph for larger, arterial City-owned streets; and 30-plus mph for a few City-owned streets. Armatage Halloween Tour Voting Results

While we wait on election news, the results of the Armatage Halloween Tour are in! THANK YOU to everyone who participated – we were blown away by the displays this year!

The houses that won for each category are listed below and the voting was CLOSE:
  • Neighborhood Favorite (top): 5821 Sheridan Ave S
  • Spookiest (bottom left): 5404 Oliver Ave S
  • Best Use of Pumpkins (bottom right): 5520 Upton Ave S

Safety Update from the 5th Precinct

There has been an increase in street robberies including carjacking incidents this year. While not every recent incident appears connected to a pattern, there have been multiple incidents involving teen/young adult suspects acting in a group to approach the intended victim on the street, sidewalk, parking area or garage and then using physical force or the threat of force to demand the victim’s bag, phone and car keys.  The incidents happen very quickly and with masks worn, it can be challenging to describe and identify those involved.

Our area Crime Prevention Coordinator has outlined personal safety and common crime prevention tactics here. While this is by no means an exhaustive list, being aware of your surroundings, keeping car doors locked, not allowing others the use of your cell phone, and other simple strategies can help protect yourself and reduce opportunities for crime.

Compost Pumpkins and Gourds

Pro tip: now that Halloween is over, compost your pumpkins and gourds! Use a backyard compost bin, bag them with your other yard waste or place them in your green organics recycling cart for collection by the City of Minneapolis!

See below for the end of the 2020 Yard Waste Collection Season and please remove all candles, wax, and other decorations before composting pumpkins. If your pumpkin is painted, please place it in the trash instead. Photo credit: Zero Waste West Metro Minnesota

Street Sweeping is Happening Now

Watch the progress. Sign up for notifications. Check for weather-related schedule changes. Learn the answers to all your street sweeping questions here.

We also want to include a friendly reminder to keep your leaves and other debris out of city streets even if street sweeping is scheduled soon. It’s harmful to our lakes and waterways and it’s against the law (Title 17, § 427.270 of the Minneapolis Code). Bag your leaves and set them out for yard waste collection (or use them to mulch perennials!) instead.

Yard Waste Collection Ending Soon

Got leaves, branches or pumpkins?  The week of November 16 is your last chance to set them out for yard waste collection. For details on how to bag and bundle your yard waste, visit http://www.minneapolismn.gov/solid-waste/yardwaste/index.htm

https://us02web.zoom.us/j/502813335

“Back to school” sure looks different this year! Connect with neighbors at our next Virtual Happy Hour on Tuesday, August 11 from 8:00-9:00pm to discuss your concerns, share ideas, and talk about distance learning in the time of COVID-19. Grab a snack or drink and feel free to come for part or all of the hour. Funny backgrounds encouraged and friends who live outside Armatage welcome! Full Zoom link and details at armatage.org/events/neighborhood-happy-hours.

Vote in the August 11 Primary

Many polling places in Minneapolis have changed for the August 11 Primary AND November 3 General Election, including in our neighborhood! If you previously voted at the Armatage Community Center, your polling place is now on the opposite side of the building at Armatage Montessori.  Know where to vote on Election Day, see a sample ballot, and read voter tips at pollfinder.sos.state.mn.us. Don’t forget your mask!

Vote Early In-person

You can still visit the Minneapolis Early Vote Center (980 East Hennepin Ave, Minneapolis MN 55414) through August 10 to vote early in person. Hours are currently Monday-Friday from 8:00am – 4:30pm and Saturday from 9:00am – 4:00pm.  All the details you need to vote early are posted at vote.minneapolismn.gov.

Become an Election Judge

Election judges are needed at polling places. Any eligible voter who can read, write and speak English can apply – and multilingual judges are particularly important. Judges receive training and are paid for their time. Hennepin County is working to ensure polling places are safe for both voters and election judges during this COVID-19 pandemic. Learn more and apply to become an election judge.

No Contact Drop-off for Absentee Ballots

Not sure your absentee ballot will make it in time for the primary? Minneapolis Elections and Voter Services has a great no-contact option for you! Bikers and pedestrians welcome to drop-off at the hours above.

No ballots may be dropped off at polling places on Election Day so if you need to drop off your ballot on Tuesday, August 11, you must deliver it by 3:00pm to the City of Minneapolis office at 980 East Hennepin Avenue or to the Hennepin County Government Center at 300 South 6th Street.

Donations Needed for the Bridge for Youth

Currently, youth are the most likely segment of Minnesota’s population to be homeless. Of Minnesota’s 6,000 homeless youth, 35% are pregnant or parenting. In Hennepin County, this rises to nearly 50%. Opening this month, Gloria’s Place will be the only emergency shelter specifically for homeless teen parents and their children in the state of Minnesota. Through comprehensive case management, youth in Gloria’s Place will have their immediate needs met, in addition to access healthcare, assistance in obtaining vital documents, parenting groups, enrolling in school and individual and group counseling and more.

You can help the Bridge for Youth create a safe, welcoming environment for the youth at Gloria’s Place by donating much-needed items from their registry at Target. Follow the Bridge for Youth on Facebook and Instagram for more updates along the way and check out KARE11‘s recent feature on Gloria’s Place.

Proposed City Charter Amendment

Learn more about the City Council’s proposed charter amendment at http://www2.minneapolismn.gov/charter/WCMSP-225116 If passed, it would create a new Community Safety & Violence Prevention Department and remove the Police Department from the Charter. The Charter Commission has one more public hearing on the amendment scheduled for next Tuesday, July 21 at 6:00pm.

Ways to comment:

Final Revised City Budget Public Hearing

The City Council’s Budget Committee will hold its final public hearing on proposed revisions to the City’s 2020 budget. Minneapolis faces a significant revenue shortfall as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and needs to make cuts to the City’s roughly $1.5 billion budget. Community members can engage and share their voices in this process during the second and last online public hearing this Wednesday, July 22 at 10:00am.

You can watch or participate in the online meetings. The City Council is scheduled to vote July 24 on a revised 2020 budget. For more information about the budget, visit the City’s website.

Mental Health Crisis and Non-Emergency Crime Surveys

The City of Minneapolis wants to hear from residents who have experienced and reported mental health emergencies and non-emergency crimes.  A team of residents and staff are redesigning the way calls are handled and hope to hear your perspectives on who responded, how you were treated, and if your needs were met to make real change in our communities. Surveys are open to all and responses are anonymous. Both close this Friday, July 17 at 11:59pm.

Click here for the mental health survey.
Click here for the non-emergency crime survey.

If you have questions, please email the Office of Performance & Innovation at innovate@minneapolismn.gov

Polling Location Changes

To keep voters safe, 50 polling locations throughout Minneapolis are changing for both the 2020 Primary and General Election. Of the 50 relocated polling places, 16 were in senior homes, high-rises and other residential sites and another 32 had insufficient space for people to keep at least 6 feet apart. Registered voters will receive a postcard in the mail with their new polling locations. You can also check the Minnesota Secretary of State’s polling place finder to see if your polling place has changed.

Vote by Mail

All Minnesota voters are eligible to vote by mail. This year in particular, we encourage you to stay safe and minimize direct contact with others while exercising your civic duty. It only takes a couple minutes to request ballots for both the August 11 primary and the general election. Ballots will arrive with postage-paid envelopes for return. Complete the vote by mail application online here.   You can track the status of your ballot or confirm that it was received back and accepted without problem.
