Reflect Before You Post

With emotions running high, it is important to take a moment to reflect on our words and how they may affect your neighbors. Before hitting “post” consider:

  • How would you feel if someone directed your statement at your child/parent/significant other/etc.?
  • Would you share this point-of-view at work/church/public meeting?
  • Would you say this comment in-person to the individual or group of people you are referring to?

The ANA will continue to compile safety resources through the August trials at https://armatage.org/trial/

Pause Before You Post

As we get closer to the end of the trial, you may be on high alert for suspicious behavior. Take a moment to pause before sharing information on social media. Does your post:

  1. Focus on behavior and how/why you think it is suspicious (which might change depending on the time of day)?
  2. Provide a full description of the person/s involved, including clothing, as well as details about the location, vehicle, etc. to avoid over-generalizations?

Find more information on how to report concerns, mental health supports, and more safety resources at https://armatage.org/trial/.

Hennepin County Food Waste Survey

We love food, which is why most of us hate seeing it go to waste. By taking steps to reducing food waste, you can ensure that the money you spend on your food and the energy, land and water it takes to grow it and get it to you doesn’t go to waste. Reducing food waste is also one of the most important actions we can take to address climate change.

Safety & Trial Information

City of Minneapolis Trial Support & Safety

The City of Minneapolis launched a webpage to keep our community safe and informed during the spring and summer trials. Find updates on current street closures, sign up for trial updates, report suspicious activity, and find mental health resources for support during this traumatic time at https://www.minneapolismn.gov/government/programs-initiatives/trial-support-safety/

How to Call for Help

  • Call 911 for emergencies where someone’s safety is at risk that requires an immediate response from police, firefighters, or medics.
  • Call 612-673-5335 or text 847411 to report suspicious activity directly to MPD that doesn’t require an emergency response (example: reporting a fast-moving car without license plates or spotting something odd in an alley)
  • Call Minneapolis 311 at 311 or 612-673-3000 or email Minneapolis311@minneapolismn.gov for non-emergency concerns.

Mental Health Supports

This is a traumatizing time for many in our community. While we grieve in the days and weeks ahead, there are supports out there if you are struggling. See a comprehensive list of mental health resources for Minneapolis residents and their loved ones at https://bit.ly/mplsMHsupports

Interacting on Social Media

Be Helpful, Not Hurtful

Reflect on your words:

  • How would you feel if someone directed your statement at your child/parent/significant other/etc.?
  • Would you share this point-of-view at work/church/public meeting?
  • Would you say this comment in-person to the individual or group of people you are referring to?

Check Yourself – Think Before You Post

Take a moment to pause and reflect before you post to social media to help share mindful, helpful information.

  • (check) Focus on behavior (what was someone doing that concerned you and how does it relate to crime)
  • (check) Give a full description including clothing and specifics about location
  • (check) Don’t assume criminality based on race or ethnicity

Additional Resources

Minneapolis Public Schools has a great set of resources for supporting children during this time: https://mpls.k12.mn.us/trial_resources.html

Our colleagues at the Minneapolis Downtown Council put together a helpful guide with dates, links, and FAQs on the trials. Check it out at https://www.mplsdowntown.com/trial/

Community members in attendance asked questions regarding the menu and hours of operation (~7:00am-3:00pm) and shared their feedback. A motion of support passed unanimously and will be shared with the City.

The ANA also elected Nikki Lindberg as Secretary and approved funding for website technical support, communications software, and door prizes for an upcoming Green Team solar workshop. Attendees broke into small groups and outlined initial goals, meeting plans for two new Armatage Committees, Community Engagement and Safety, Equity & Outreach. See below for more on how to join. Public Hearing on Rent Stabilization: February 24

An online public hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 24 on proposed rent stabilization charter amendments during the City Council’s Policy & Government Oversight Committee meeting.

The proposed amendments would allow either the City Council, or the people of Minneapolis by a petition process, to adopt a rent stabilization law. If passed, these charter amendments will not, on their own, create a rent stabilization policy. Rather, they will give future City Councils and the people of Minneapolis all possible options to adopt a rent stabilization policy through the methods allowed under current state law.  Learn how to participate in online public hearings and sign up to speak here.

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) approved the concept plan for a new playground at Armatage Park, which includes replacing the equipment and surfacing of the park’s existing play areas. The new play areas are designed for universal accessibility so they can be accessed, understood, enjoyed, and used to the greatest extent possible by all children regardless of size, ability, or disability.

In addition to an ADA-accessible swing, belt swing and two infant swings, the approved plan includes a tire swing, based on requests from the community and an MPRB commissioner.

What Comes Next for Plastic

THANK YOU to everyone who joined our Let’s Talk About Plastic series.  We were blown away by the response from both Armatage and surrounding communities.  Plastic is wreaking havoc in our world and is an equity issue that disproportionately impacts BIPOC and low-income communities.  Here’s how you can take action:

Joint Carjacking and Robbery Operation Arrests

Sharing this update from the City of Minneapolis:

Officers from the Minneapolis Police Department and deputies with the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Violent Offender Task Force teamed up recently with air support from the Minnesota State Patrol to target groups of individuals responsible for the on-going number of violent robberies and carjackings in parts of South Minneapolis.

The three-day joint operation, which took place Jan. 26-28, resulted in 46 arrests, including 69 felony level charges. Law enforcement recovered 15 firearms and 12 stolen vehicles. Six of the vehicles were occupied at the time officers and deputies seized the vehicles.

The felony level arrests included probable cause charges of carjacking, drugs and weapons violations, auto theft and fleeing police. Last year, there were 405 carjackings in the city of Minneapolis, a 301% increase over 2019.

Tips to reduce your risk of becoming a carjacking victim:

  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • Always be hyper-aware of your surroundings.
  • Equip your car with an anti-theft device.
  • Lock your doors while driving.
  • Don’t stop for apparently stranded strangers along the road. Note their location and pull over in a safe place once you’ve passed to call for help.

Statewide Vaccine Finder

The State of Minnesota has ramped up its COVID-19 vaccination efforts and launched a statewide vaccine finder to better connect Minnesotans age 65 plus to vaccination opportunities in communities near where they live. Learn more about the State’s vaccine distribution plan.

Saving Energy Can Make Your Home More Comfortable

It takes a lot of energy to keep our homes comfortable during Minneapolis’s famously chilly winters. However, homes that look similar may need very different amounts of energy to maintain this comfort. That difference is measurable — it represents the energy efficiency of a home.

For almost a year, the City has been assessing the energy use of houses on the market and has compiled thousands of home efficiency scores. Because many Minneapolis homes are older, the average city score is 70 out of 100. (You can
view the publicly available map of scores online at mncee.org/tish/yourscore).

Call 651-328-6225 to speak with an Energy Advisor or visit mncee.org/tish for more information.

Keep Calm and Use Less Salt

When snow and ice melt, the road salt must go somewhere. When over applied, the excess salt flows directly into ditches and storm drains and then into lakes, streams, wetlands, and groundwater. Salt does not breakdown or degrade over time and instead will persist, permanently polluting our waterways.

Less is more when it comes to applying salt because at high concentrations, chloride can harm the fish and plant life in our waters and alter the taste of drinking water. In fact, the salt sitting on the pavement is no longer helping us, it’s hurting us and polluting our waters. We’ve all seen it and now it’s time to address the problem head on.

More salting does not mean more melting. Remember these 4 steps during our next storm:

  • Shovel and scrape before snow compacts,
  • Select the correct de-icer,
  • Scatter salt only where critical, and
  • Sweep up and reuse leftover salt.

Salt is widely used and is an important public safety tool in winter conditions. The goal is not to compromise public safety, but instead advocate how we can wisely use salt to provide safe conditions and be mindful of the environment. If you’re interested in learning more or have any questions, feel free to reach out to Lianna at lianna.goldstein@minneapolismn.gov
